The joke plays on "abroad" sounding like "a broad" — an old-fashioned slang term for a woman. So instead of studying internationally, the person was literally staring at a woman! More than 4.6 million students study abroad annually worldwide, with Spain, Italy, and the UK being the most popular destinations for American students seeking international education experiences.
