She Was Afraid Every Single Day

Inspirational image for quote

"I've been absolutely terrified every moment of my life — and I've never let it keep me from doing a single thing I wanted to do."

— Georgia O'Keeffe

Georgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986) is widely regarded as the mother of American modernism, known for her large-scale paintings of flowers, bones, and the stark landscapes of the New Mexico desert. She lived and painted until she was nearly ninety-nine years old, producing work across eight decades that remained unmistakably her own. O'Keeffe spent much of her later life alone at Ghost Ranch in Abiquiú, maintaining a practice and a vision that had little interest in approval or trend. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the National Medal of Arts — and by her own account, remained afraid through all of it.

RESILIENCE AND COURAGE
AUTHENTICITY
PERSEVERANCE

Context

O'Keeffe said this late in her life, looking back across a career that had required persistent acts of courage — moving alone to the Texas panhandle when female artists were expected to stay in cities, leaving New York entirely for the New Mexico desert, developing a visual language that critics called strange before they called it genius. The quote refuses the narrative that courageous people do not feel fear. It insists on the opposite: that fear was her constant condition, and that the decision to act anyway was simply the decision she kept making. What is most useful about this is what it removes. It removes the idea that you need to fix the fear before you can move. It removes the waiting. It places the only relevant variable — what you do — entirely in your own hands, regardless of what you feel.

Today's Mantra

Fear is present. So am I. And I am the one deciding what happens next.

Reflection Question

What have you been waiting to do until the fear goes away? How long have you been waiting? And given O'Keeffe's eighty-year record of it never leaving — what would it mean to simply stop expecting it to leave and act from exactly where you are?

Application Tip

Each morning this week, name one thing fear has been keeping you from — not a grand life change, just something specific and doable that you have been avoiding. Then do that thing before the end of the day, not after the fear passes but alongside it. O'Keeffe's practice was not complicated. She simply refused to make fear the deciding vote. You can make the same refusal, one day at a time.
