Why did the doorbell always get the credit?

It made the first impression.

This joke plays on "first impression" — literally the first thing a doorbell does when someone rings it, and figuratively the phrase for how we judge new people or things. Doorbells date back to the 1830s, and early versions used mechanical pull-cranks rather than electric buttons.
