Ancient Wisdom, Modern Problem

My Book Club Demands I Finish Every Page

Dear Francis Bacon,

My book club of eight women meets the first Thursday of every month, and our host has declared that anyone who has not finished all 612 pages of the pick must sit on the ottoman and stay quiet. I read 140 pages and skimmed the rest while the casserole cooled. Honestly, the book is a swamp. Yet there I sat on the ottoman, feeling like a fraud. Should I fake it, finish it, or confess? How do I read like a grown woman and not a hostage?

Francis Bacon Replies

Francis Bacon, English philosopher, statesman, and essayist (1561 to 1626)

Dear Skimming in Savannah,

Dear Skimming in Savannah, an ottoman is a fine seat for a woman who has told the truth. I have sat in worse, including a Parliament. But your host has confused two different virtues: finishing a book and benefiting from it. The first is a matter of stamina. The second is a matter of judgment, and I shall show you the difference.

I wrote my essays short because I believed most of life's fat can be trimmed. In Of Studies, I sorted books by how they ought to be read. As I put it, "Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested." You tasted a swamp, madam, and your tongue reported accurately. Your host serves every book as a banquet. No honest appetite works that way.

So stop apologizing and start sorting. Decide which category this book earned. Then arrive with something better than page count: two or three passages you actually chewed, and one plain verdict on why the rest did not deserve your evening. A club exists for conversation, and a sharp opinion about 140 pages feeds it better than a dull summary of 612. Propose that each member name her category aloud.

This week, write your verdict on one card: the category, the best page, and one sentence of judgment. Speak first on Thursday, before anyone can send you to the ottoman. Confidence is the best cover for honesty. And if the host objects, remind her that a book finished without thought is merely a book endured.

In Francis Bacon's Own Words

“Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested.”

— Francis Bacon, Of Studies

In his short essay Of Studies, Bacon discusses why people read and how reading shapes a person. He argues that not every book deserves the same effort: some need only a sampling, some a quick pass, and a precious few deserve slow, careful attention. His point is that discernment matters more than completion. It still fits any modern reader who feels guilty for not finishing everything handed to her.

Who Was Francis Bacon?

Francis Bacon was an English lawyer, member of Parliament, and eventually Lord Chancellor under King James I. He is also remembered as a pioneer of the scientific method, arguing that knowledge should be built from observation and experiment. His Essays, first published in 1597 and expanded in 1612 and 1625, are famously compact and full of aphorisms on subjects from studies to friendship. His political career ended in disgrace in 1621, after which he returned to writing. He is still read for his crisp, practical wisdom.

Try This Today

Pick the book, article, or email chain you have been feeling guilty about. Give yourself exactly five minutes and decide whether it deserves tasting, swallowing, or chewing. Write that one word on a sticky note and put it on the cover. Then act accordingly: skim without apology, or set aside a real hour for the few that earn it. Notice how much lighter the pile feels.

Your Turn

What is one thing you have been dutifully finishing out of guilt, and what would change if you simply tasted it instead?
